Watch that cyclist!

On a dark note, studies have shown there is a vicarious Peltzmann Effect too. Drivers adjust for the perceived safety of other road users. Dr Walker at the University of Bath has shown that when cyclists are wearing helmets, drivers give them less room when passing them. But when they aren't wearing a helmet  they give them more room. Nice.  Interestingly drivers gave even more room to cyclists they thought were women, whether they were wearing a helmet or not.  It seems serious cyclists need to dress appropriately to stay safe.
